Forestry
Kapuskasing has strong roots in the forestry industry. With a strategic location along the Trans-Canada highway, immediate access to railway, a bilingual, available and experienced work force, Kapuskasing is truly open for value-added wood products businesses.
The regional forestry sector includes:
- biomass
- logging
- paper products
- wood Manufacturing
Value-added wood products account for roughly 60% of Ontario's forest products. In addition, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) opens up free access to an American market that represents over 420 million consumers.
Tembec (now GreenFirst) is the community's largest employer. The company has 575 employees in the newsprint mill, sawmill and wood chip operations, and forest resource management group.
Kapuskasing is located within the Gorden Cosens Forest. The company is also the Sustainable Forest Licence (SFL) holder of management unit (MU) #438. SFLs are long term licences granted for up to 20 years. As the SFL holder, Tembec must:
- prepare forest management plans
- gather forest information for the Crown
- monitor and report on compliance
- conduct forest operations in accordance with approved plans and operational standards for the area covered by the licence
The Town of Kapuskasing is a proud Ontario Wood supporter.
